Résumés, ATS & job search

Definitions, formats, tailoring, and how Pro Resumes—including the resume AI agent—fits your workflow.

A resume is a concise document that summarizes your work experience, education, skills, and accomplishments. It shows employers why you deserve an interview—usually in one or two focused pages. The goal is to make your strongest qualifications easy to scan in seconds.
In many places the terms are used interchangeably, but they are not always the same. A resume is usually shorter and tailored to a specific role, emphasizing what is most relevant. A CV (curriculum vitae) is often longer and more complete, covering your full academic or professional history. For most U.S. job applications, a resume is the standard format.
Match the template to your industry and the role. Creative fields sometimes allow a bit more visual personality; finance, law, and many corporate roles favor a clean, easy-to-scan layout. Prioritize readability: clear headings, sensible spacing, and no clutter that hides your achievements. Common formats include chronological (most common—recent jobs first), functional (skills-first, useful for gaps or career changes), and combination (skills plus work history). In Pro Resumes you can start from a proven template and adjust as you go.
Most resumes emphasize roughly the last 10–15 years, focusing on what is recent and relevant. Older roles can be shortened or omitted if they do not support the job you want. The point is to highlight impact without making the reader wade through every job you have ever had.
ATS (Applicant Tracking System) software helps employers filter and organize applications. An ATS-friendly résumé favors linear layouts and predictable headings so parsing engines extract fields reliably: canonical section titles, conventional fonts, JD-aligned keywords, and minimal graphics or tables that break text extraction. Exporting to common formats like PDF or .docx (when the employer allows it) keeps things compatible. Pro Resumes is built with ATS readability in mind—clean layouts and structure you can trust.
Most job seekers use PDF for a consistent look, or .docx when an employer or portal asks for Word. You can often upload a .docx to your cloud storage and open it in an online document editor for light edits. Check the job posting for specific instructions—when in doubt, PDF is widely accepted.
It can be. A good builder saves time, keeps formatting consistent, and helps you avoid weak structure or ATS traps. Free tiers are fine to start; paid plans usually unlock more templates, AI help, and export options. If you are applying seriously, a small investment in a polished resume often pays for itself in fewer wasted applications. See our pricing for what is included.
Yes—tailoring matters. Recruiters notice when your bullets and keywords reflect their posting. You do not need to rewrite from scratch: duplicate your base resume, then adjust your summary, skills, and the bullets that best match the role. Pro Resumes makes it easy to keep versions and refine wording with the resume AI agent.
Pro Resumes combines AI-assisted writing, a resume AI agent you chat with so you are not stuck alone on a blank page, and templates designed for clarity and ATS-friendly structure—so you can go from draft to application faster, with confidence your resume reads professional. Start building when you are ready.
